Do you feel extremely sleepy just after meals? You’re not alone! A lot of us experience extreme fatigue after eating. This could be due to a number of reasons and doesn’t mean that you are ill. Fatigue is about feeling tired all the time. Here’s our take on fighting fatigue.

Causes of Fatigue after Meals:

Fatigue may be caused due to different reasons. Everyone has a different body and hence people have different triggers of feel tired. The first 3 causes are mostly due to food that have a High GI (glycemic index)

  • Consuming processed food is among the top causes of fatigue.
  • Intake of Sugar, Soft dairy products and wheat.
  • Excess carbs (like grains & potatoes) – Must Avoide These!
  • Not having an active lifestyle or lack of working out can make you sleepy all the time
  • Drinking less water than you should may cause tiredness.
  • High stress levels can also trigger fatigue and lethargy.
  • Lack of sleep
  • Sugar crash after meals (body usually recovers from it in half an hour)
  • Reactive hypoglycemia could also be among the medical reasons for feeling tired & fatigued.

Get Rid Of Fatigue After Meals

  1. Try and eat more unprocessed foods. Add fruits in your diet & consume lots of water. It’s really good for your health. A diet consisting of Fruits, Oats and Protien Smoothie should be great.
  2. A lot of people have gluten intolerance, which causes them to feel sleepy & lethargic just after eating. You could take a short nap after eating (15-20 minutes) and be back to feeling fresh again. If you would not like to take a nap after eating, then it would be best to adjust your diet accordingly. A low carbohydrate diet works really well
  3. Fatigue after eating can also be due to food allergy. Consult your doctor if you feel this might be the case.
  4. The fatigued or sleepy feeling just after a meal is known a Post-Prandial Dip. It is caused by a drop in glucose levels in blood, due to an insulin spike stimulated by the eating. Excessive sleepiness, fatigue and tiredness can occur if the meal is high in carbs, or if you have a insulin problem. Eating the right kind of food will help.
  5. Soups and salad and green juices with handful of cooked beans will give you plenty of energy. Avoid all processed foods. Avoid Chances are that you are having a classic American diet including a lot of high corn fructose corn syrup, saturated fats(Mcdonalds) and cereals.
